The simple past tense is used when speaking of actions that finished in the past.

These can be actions completed in the past

We saw a film last night.
I had dinner at my friend’s house yesterday.
Were you in Spain last year?
I went to school.

Or they can be a series of completed actions.

I woke up, ate my breakfast and went to work.
